“There are more neuroses on view [in NYC] per square meter than any place I’ve ever been.”
Richard Bram
March 22, 2017 — Peanut Press is excited to announce an exhibition by photographer Richard Bram to coincide with his book, Richard Bram New York. Books will be on sale at the gallery, and Bram will be signing at the opening reception on Thursday, April 6th.
The work in Richard Bram New York uncovers both the absurd and poignant moments in everyday gestures as well as unusual “only in New York” moments found among the hustle and bustle: a box of fries spilled widely onto the sidewalk; a makeshift psychic readings stand sprung up in an empty lot, a map flung into a tourist’s face presumably by wind. Each of these instances gains new life and meaning through Bram’s skilled lens.
Shooting professionally since 1984, Richard Bram New York showcases an inventory of the photographer’s years in New York, from 2008-2015, as well as his move into color photography. “Color is much harder to do well,” Bram told Slate. “Because we are swimming in a sea of color images, to make something that stands out, that has something to say, that handles the color within the frame, as well as the subject of the photo, is really difficult.” The results are astonishingly vibrant images that expertly capture the mood of a city in the 21st century.
Richard Bram regularly writes, lectures, exhibits, and gives street photography workshops in such diverse locations as New York City, the Tate Modern and Tate Liverpool in the UK, Bangkok, Tel Aviv, and Tbilisi. He is one of the founding members of the premiere international street photographers’ collective, iN-PUBLiC. His work can be found in many institutional collections, including the Museum of London, the Museum of the City of New York, Bibliothèque nationale de France, George Eastman House/International Museum of Photography and the University of Louisville Photographic Archives.
Peanut Press is an independent photobook publisher, founded by photographers David J. Carol and Ashly Stohl. Our mission is to make beautiful books by and for photographers whose work is impossible to ignore or forget.
